Tell A Friend About LaneFX

1 Not all participants experienced one of the studied distractions during their normal daily drive.
2 Driving while “using a cell phone" does not distinguish between talking on a cell phone, text messaging or other cell device functions. Study does however distinguish the use of “hands-free cell phones” which are represented in a separate category.
3 Study did not examine compound effect of multiple distractions occurring simultaneously.
4 Requests for raw study data will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis with priority given to educational and and non-profit organizations.

In our latest LaneFX® Auto Safety Series, we compiled responses from 487 participants to a structured survey designed to assess the impact of the most common in-vehicle distractions on the their ability and/or willingness to check the vehicle's blind spots1. All respondents were online volunteers that received no compensation for their participation. Only one completed survey response was allowed per participant (via single IP method). The survey was active for a six months period (from 5/1/2007 thru 10/30/2007). Survey was open to US and Canadian licensed drivers and vehicle owners, 18 years of age or older.

Because of the large sample size (nearly 500 completed surveys), the results are statistically valid with an overall sample error of +/-3%. Also due to the large sample size, the participant demographics were fairly uniform and are a good representation of who's on US and Canadian roads today. Take a look at the pie charts to the right of your screen to see the distribution of participant gender, primary vehicle, current blind spot checking habits, as well as whether any blind spot checking aids are utilized.

In addition to the demographics shown, survey respondents stated that they commute an average of 27.6 miles (44.4 km) per day and spend approximately 76% of this travel time in rush hour traffic.

The LaneFX driver distraction study set out to examine such driving distractions as the all-too-common driver fatigue, cell phone use2 (including hand-free operation), on-board navigation, attending to small children, and yes, even the universally-dreaded attention to personal appearance while behind the wheel.

The results of the impact of such distraction are staggering and telling of how we behave on the road when these distraction apply:3

At LaneFX, we have dedicated significant effort to ensure the high quality of data collection, analysis and dissemination. With that, we would like to thank all of you who have participated in this significant study and to all who choose to participate in our next study: America's Blind Spot Challenge.
